Zdeněk Troška is one of the most popular and commercially most successful directors of Czech films in the last twenty years. Mr. Troška’s films have won many awards and have been sold in more than thirty countries around the world. Born in Hoštice near Volyně in 1953, Mr. Troška completed secondary school studies at the Lycée Carnot in Dijon, France and then studied film and television direction at Prague’s Academy of Performing Arts, graduating in 1978. He succesfully served also as a stage director for Verdi’s Don Carlos in the Smetana Theatre (1989). For performances at Křižík’s Fountain he adapted Dvořák’s Rusalka (1995 – 1999) which was given for five seasons with enormous success. His ballet Čertoviny (Devilishness) to music by Petr Malásek was mounted in the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň in 1998. He directed also a musical, Hamlet, for the Kalich Theatre in Prague. Together with the set designer Milan Ferenčík he mounted Dvořák’s Rusalka (2006) and Gounod’s Faust (2007). In the South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice he directed Weber’s Der Freichütz (2009).
For the Prague State Opera Zdeněk Troška staged Bizet’s Carmen (opening performance March 11, 2004) and Dvořák’s Rusalka (opening performance May 5, 2005).
