Vladimír Chmelo

Vladimír Chmelo graduated from the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno (1983–1987). In 1986 he attended singing master classes in Siena, Italy, with Professor Daniel Ferro and later on took part in a study residency with the Romanian baritone Dan Iordachescu. At the present time, he works under the pedagogic tutelage of Professor Paolo de Napoli in Florence. He is a laureate of Prague’s International Mozart Competition, Karlovy Vary’s Antonín Dvořák Singers’ Competition and, in 1997, the F. Tagliavini International Competition in Austria.

After completing his studies, between 1987 and 1997 he was a soloist of the National Theatre Opera in Brno, where he created a host of roles in his extensive repertoire. Currently, he is a permanent guest of the State Opera Prague, the Slovak National Theatre Opera in Bratislava, the Janáček Opera in Brno and the National Theatre in Prague. During his artistic career, Vladimír Chmelo has performed on concert and opera stages in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Israel, Norway, Great Britain, Japan, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, France and Switzerland. Of the numerous recordings for radio, television and gramophone companies we may mention at least 1977’s complete recording of P. Hass’ opera Charlatan for Decca in which he sang the title role.

In 1998 Vladimír Chmelo was awarded the Thalia Award for his brilliant interpretation of the role of Fanuel in A. Boito’s opera Nerone, produced by the State Opera Prague.
