Tomas Bartunek studied voice privately with Prof. Jankovský and Ivan Kusnjer alongside studies at the machinery college of the Czech Technical University. After graduating from college he decided to pursue a professional career as a singer and became a member of the chorus of the Prague State Opera. In 1993 he became a regular soloist with the J. K. Tyl Theater in Plzeň, where he performed a series of bass roles in new productions. At the present time he is performing as a guest in opera houses not only in the Czech Republic but also in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In 1997 he performed the role of Leporello in Mozart’s Don Giovanni in the Perth Festival in Australia, where two years later he appeared again in Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust. He has made good use of his resonant, balanced voice and natural acting ability in the roles of Kecal, Philip II, Leporello, Fotis in The Greek Passion, and Mephistopheles in Gounod’s Faust. In 1988 he accepted an offer to perform the title role in the original Czech musical Dracula, in which he appeared also in Bratislava and Prešov, thus expanding his performance activities to perform not only in opera houses but in musicals as well.
