Richard Wiegold

Formerly a professional cellist, Welsh bass Richard Wiegold studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, United Kingdom, 1999 – 2003. He now continues his studies with the distinguished tenor Anthony Roden.

In 2009 Richard Wiegold made his Covent Garden debut as Dr. Grenvil (La Traviata), performances which were broadcast across Europe. Other roles include Arkel (Pelléas et Mélisande) and Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni) for the Canadian Opera; Il Zio Bonze (Madama Butterfly) and Banquo (Macbeth) for Scottish Opera; Sarastro (Die Zauberflte) for Cork Opera House, Ireland; Mercenary Solder in the Wexford Festivals (recorded by Naxos) ; Pistola (Falstaff) and Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni) at the Lyrique-en-Mer Festival, France; Rocco (Fidelio) with London Lyric Opera; Badger/Priest (Cunning Little Wixen) at the Wiener Kammeroper, Austria; Death (Der Kaiser von Atlantis) with the Hall Orchestra, UK; The Green Knight (Gwynneth and the Green Knight) for Music Theatre Wales.

Richard Wiegold’s diary for 2010 includes Dr. Grenvil (La Traviata) at Covent Garden and on tour with the company to Japan (where Richard Wiegold will also understudy Comte des Grieux in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut) and Elder Ott in Carlyle Floyds Susannah at Teatro Arriaga de Bilbao. In 2011, he makes his Salzburg Festival debut as the Fifth Jew (Salome), which he will also sing in concert with the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2012, Richard Wiegold will sing Reinmar von Zweter (Tannhäuser) and Stefano Colonna (Rienzi) at the Théatre du Capitole, Toulouse.

Richard Wiegold appears regularly on the concert platform and has performed at festivals and leading venues in China, Ireland, France and the UK. Richard Wiegold’s debut at the Prague State Opera is also his debut as King Marke (Tristan und Isolde), which role he has previously understudied at Covent Garden.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
