Martin Šrejma

Soloist of the State Opera Prague

Born in Prague. Has been singing since his childhood, as a children's choir's soloist in almost every continent. Along with his studies at the Prague Conservatoire in the class of Professor Jiří Kotouč, Martin Šrejma was a guest singer in the Prague State Opera as Alfredo (La Traviata), and Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor), and performed at many concerts both at home and abroad. At the same time he took part in many contests such as the International Singing Competition of Antonín Dvořák in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) in 2002 and 2004. He has become a laureate of this competition, where he also won the Prague National Theatre Award. During the 2003-2004 Season he joined a Swiss Opera Company on a tour through Germany and Switzerland, where he sang Alfredo in Die Fliedermaus by Strauss. In 2004 he stayed in Parma, Italy, at the Arrigo Boito Conservatoire where he studied singing with Professor Lucetta Bizzi and took part in Master Interpretation Classes of Eugenio Furlotti. In spring 2005 he sang in Canada on a tour with the Toronto Philharmonic led by Kerry Stratton. After completing his studies in 2005 Martin Šrejma has become a solo singer of the Prague State Opera where he has also performed, apart from the previously mentioned roles, as Tamino (The Magic Flute), Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto). Martin Šrejma was also invited to take part in the concert of Leo Nucci at the Žofín in Prague. He has been co–operating with Opera Mozart, where he has performed in the role of Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre in 2006. Martin Šrejma also frequently appears at concerts (Händel – Rinaldo, Alcina; Bononcini – Astarto; Mozart – Requiem, Davide penitente; Haydn – Die Schöpfung etc.). As a permanent guest of the National Theatre in Prague he has sung the roles of Jeník (Bartered Bride), Tamino (The Magic Flute) and more.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
