Daniel Mesguich

Daniel Mesguich studied Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique in Paris in Antoine Vitez and Pierra Debauch’s class and has been a teacher there since 1983. In 1974 he established his own ensemble – Théâtre du Miroir. In years 1986–1988 he was a director of Théâtre Gérard in Saint-Denis and in years 1991–1998 he managed Théâtre National in Lille. In 1998 he established a new ensemble: Miroir et Métaphore. He directed a great number of classical and contemporary plays. A few of the most notedly are the works of Pierre Marivaux (Le Double Inconstance), Jean Racine (Britannicus, Andromaque, Bérénice, Mitridate), Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (Platonov), Paul Claudel (La Tete d’Or), Victor Hugo (Maria Tudor), William Shakespeare (Hamlet – three versions, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet,Titus Andronicus, The Tempest), Moliére (Don Juan). He has also directed a number of operas including Le Grand Macabre from Ligeti in the Paris Opera, Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges in the Comic Opera in Paris, the complete tetralogy of Richard Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelung in Opera in Nice and the Champs-Elysées theatre, Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera in Opera House in Lille, Berg’s Woyzeck in Montpellier Opera, Offenbach’s operetta La Vie Parisienne in Comédie Française. He is also a well known actor. He introduced himself for example as Hamlet, Platonov, Camille Desmoulins and Pascal.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
