The ballet is based on the well-known old-Prague legend about Rabbi Löwe. However, here Golem is not a clay monster but a normal human being – a boy who falls in love with Rabbi’s daughter. This situation, of course, gives rise to problems and that is why Golem eventually has to be conjured away.
