Cast

Mozart’s last comical opera to an Italian text was made on commission for Emperor Joseph II. Mozart was not particularly excited about writing the opera, but being in a bad financial situation he accepted the commission. The topic, made into a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, is a typical comedy with substitution of characters in disguise, a rather frivolous joke, which is supposed to be a proof of female cunning. But Mozart’s masterful music evokes a melancholy, mating love with its mockery. He brought the motif up to an emotional level, to a collision of real and pretended feelings, semblance and reality, also in the form of typical opera buffo. The work is another token of his genius musical invention.

Premiere: Mar 29, 1990

Running time: 2 hours 20 minutes with 1 intermission
