Time of Pain

Staging team

Cast

Music: Ondekoza, Philip Glass, Dead Can Dance, Les Tambours du Bronx, Klaus Nomi

The former soloist of the Prague Chamber Ballet and the current ballet chief in Zwickau, Mr Bronislav Roznos, describes pain in his rendering of the performance – commencing with biblical scenes and historic witch hunting spectacles, to archetypal moments accompanying birth, death, as well as sexual pleasure. Bronislav Roznos’s choreography is extremely dynamic, on the verge of acrobatics at places, requiring physically limiting performance from the dancers. Suggestive pictures shown against the contrasting semi-circular structure, black background, candlelight, and almost naked bodies of the performers, will imprint for ever in the minds of all viewers with their expressive nature.

Premiere: Jun 2, 2005

Running time: 2 hours with 1 intermission

Response in the press

“The performance is not the ballet in its traditional meaning. It is a modern dancing composition that despite a demanding physical performance on the verge of gymnastics or even acrobatics does not lose the character of dance. (…) All dancers deserve sincere praise. The performance is an example of collective art testimony. There are no differences between the solo and group dancers in the tasks and quality of performance.”

(Jaroslav Someš, Hudební rozhledy)

“Six drama compositions on the music by Ondekoza, Philip Glass, Dead Can Dance and Les Tambours du Bronx and a song by Henry Purcell are separated by drum-playing using the large barrels that create a functional part of a beautiful stage design by Robert Schrag.”

(Marcela Benoniová, Právo)
