Paul Dukas: Ariane et Barbe-bleue

Staging team

This beautiful, mystical opera brings to the stage of Prague State Opera the knight Bluebeard and his wives. The impressionistic tale based on the poem by Maurice Maeterlinck was first premiered in Paris in 1907 and was Dukas’s first finished operatic work, in which he masterfully depicts emotions and relationships of his characters. It is not surprising that shortly after the Paris premiere the opera was staged all over the world and was performed in Prague in 1924 under Alexander Zemlinsky. After Robert le Diable it is the second production of the Prague State Opera’s French project.

Premiere: May 29, 2001

The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
