XIII. Festival of the Italian Opera

Ever since 1993, the Prague State Opera has opened its theatrical seasons with a cycle entitled the “Verdi Festival”. By this extraordinary venture, it professes the tradition of the New German Theatre where – 106 years ago, i.e., in 1899 – its then director Angelo Neumann held for the first time so-called “Maifestpiele” that immediately became very popular. In the first year, attention was mainly devoted to operas by Richard Wagner; soon, Giuseppe Verdi took his turn: almost every year, cycles of Verdi’s operas were staged with the most famous opera stars taking part. The Prague State Opera has had an identical goal: to pay homage to the great opera magician and to offer its audiences performances by some outstanding singers.

This year, it decided for the first time to extend the original project devoted to Verdi by including operas by other famous Italian composers: Puccini and Donizetti. This year’s festival (August 23 – September 4, 2005) will open with the stagings of the operas Il Trovatore, Rigoletto, La Traviata, A Masked Ball, Nabucco, Tosca and Lucia di Lammermoor. The festival, similarly as in the previous years and side by side with the best Czech soloists, will also present some outstanding international singers.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
