XIV. Festival of Italian Opera

Since 1993, the Prague State Opera keeps opening its theatrical seasons with a cycle entitled Verdi Festival. By this extraordinary event, it strives to prolong the tradition of the New German Theatre where, back in 1899, its then director Angelo Neumann held so-called Maifestpiele for the first time. The event became very popular immediately. In its first year, most attention was devoted to operas by Richard Wagner; before long, though, it became Giuseppe Verdi's turn: cycles of Verdi’s operas were organised almost every year with the leading opera stars acting as their protagonists. The Prague State Opera renewed this old tradition in 1993, however, starting in 2005 it decided for the first time to expand the scope of the Verdi Festival by introducing also operas by other famous Italian composers. This year (22 August – 9 September 2006) it will thus present – beside its successful productions of Verdi’s operas Rigoletto, Troubadour, Nabucco, The Sicilian Vespers, and Aida, also Puccini’s operasTosca, Turandot, and Madama Butterfly, as well as Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
