Competition for the staging of G. F. Händel’s Alcina

Deadline for the despatch of entries in the competition for stage sets for Handel’s Alcina is imminent!

Important notice for those personally delivering their stage scale models:

You will be expected to come on Friday, April 28, or Tuesday, May 2, 2005, from 9am to 3 pm, to the Dramaturgy Dept., Prague State Opera administrative wing.


The State Opera Prague is pleased to announce a competition for the staging of Alcina, an opera by Georg Friedrich Händel.

The design chosen by the management of the State Opera Prague after the selection made by the Selection Committee is planned to be staged in 2008/2009 season.

The competition is aimed at young directors, with no restriction on their nationality, who will not be more than 40 years old in the time of the competition closure (the age limit does not apply to other members of the stage design team).

One or more comprehensive designs for the staging may be submitted each of which must include the following:

  1. Reasoning of the director’s stage concept in writing
  2. Models of stage designs
  3. Drawings of the costume designs
  4. Other additional materials
  5. Brief CVs of all members of the staging team

No formal qualification is required of participants.

All materials submitted in writing must be in either Czech or English languages.

Stage set models submitted for competition should be made to the scale of 1:50 (c. 40 × 40 centimetres). They should be accompanied by photographic documentation of dummy sets.

The orchestra (an ensemble specializing in authentic interpretation) should be stationed either on the stage, or in a semi-elevated orchestra pit.

Designs should be submitted to PhDr. Jitka Slavíková of the Programme Section of the State Opera Praha. Only entries despatched by April 30, 2006 at the latest (postal rubber-stamp date) will be accepted..

The designs will be evaluated in two rounds by a Selection Committee appointed by Mgr. Jaroslav Vocelka, the Director of the State Opera Praha. In the first round the Selection Committee will select the works for the second round that will be organised in the form of a presentation of the design. The Selection Committee may recommend to the Director one or more designs for production.

The State Opera Praha will not compensate the participants for any costs incurred by the submission of the design. The State Opera Praha will pay for the accommodation of participants in the second round.
