Puccini Festival

August 28 – September 8, 2007

Since 1993 State Opera Prague has been starting its theatrical seasons with a cycle called Verdi Festival. By this extraordinary event SOP claims its affinity with the tradition of the New German Theatre. In 1899, i.e. 108 years ago, its director Angelo Neumann organised for the first time so called Maifestspiele which soon became very popular. Verdi opera cycles at SOP have been organised almost each year, engaging most prominent opera stars.

In 2005 State Opera Prague decided to enrich the Festival by works of other prominent Italian composers. Year 2007 presents exclusively the operas by Giacomo Puccini. From August 8 till September 8 the visitors will be able to see opera productions such as Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut and Turandot.

Title roles will be sung by State Opera soloists Anda-Louise Bogza (Tosca), Christina Vasileva (Manon Lescaut a Madama Butterfly), Jitka Burgetová (Madama Butterfly), Simona Procházková (Manon Lescaut) and the Bulgarian soprano Elena Baramova (Turandot September 1 and 7). Other foreign guests appearing on Prague State Opera stage will be Turkish tenor Efe Kişlali as Renato des Grieux (Manon Lescaut August 30, September 2 and 6) and Luciano Mastro in the role of Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly, on September 5, 2007).

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
