Exhibitions Devoted to Mozart at the Prague State Opera

The Prague State Opera intends to contribute to the celebrations of the Mozart anniversary in 2006, among other things, by two exhibitions. One is entitled “Mozart and the Prague State Opera” and it relates to the Mozart traditions in the history of this opera house. Although the name of Mozart has been automatically related to the Theatre of the Estates in Prague, also what is today the Prague State Opera and its predecessors may boast of some outstanding mise-en-scenes of Maestro’s best works given by the world’s leading performers. Actually, Mozart’s bust was one of the three – along with that of Goethe and Schiller – that adorned the portal of the then New German Theatre (they were removed after the war as part of the “denazification” drive and they are still missing today). It is particularly that although little known aspect of the Mozart cult in Prague to be upheld by the exhibition to be installed on the public premises of the Prague State Opera, commencing at the beginning of the next season and open until the end of the Mozart Year 2006. Also, the Prague State Opera will organise yet another exhibition lent to it by the Austrian Cultural Forum and entitled “Mozart and Vienna”. Also this other exhibition will be opened until the end of this year.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
