Prague State Opera’s new season opened with Verdi Festival

The conductor of this performance, the Vienna-born Roberto Paternostro, embarked on his international career at the Arena of Verona in 1985, and has since then appeared in many major opera houses, including the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Venice’s Teatro La Fenice, Teatro Liceu of Barcelona, and otehrs. He will return to the PSO orchestra pit to conduct another performance of Aida, on August 27, 2010.

The German conductor Heiko Mathias Förster will appear on five nights during the festival: in La traviata (August 20, 22 and 28), and Otello (August 25 and 29). He has to his credit a record of conducting operatic concert programmes of such international star singers as José Cura, Angela Gheorghiu, Rolando Villazón, Joseph Calleja, Elina Garanča, and Barbara Frittoli. At the Prague State Opera, he has conducted new productions of Otello (2009), and Don Quichotte (2010).

The Opernwelt magazine’s 2006 Singer of the Year, Bulgarian soprano Jordanka Derilova will be appearing as Abigaille on August 21 and 26. One-time Prague State Opera soloist, in 2003 she obtained permanent engagement with the Anhaltisches Theater in Dessau, where she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin in 2009.

August 22, La traviata

Soprano Wonsin Lee will make an appearance at the Prague State Opera as Violetta, the part which earned her a prize from the Vissi d’Arte Opera competition of 2002. Wonsin Lee is mostly active in Italy (Rome, Cosenza, Sicily).

August 24, Rigoletto

Owing to the sudden illness of baritone Vladimír Chmelo, the title role will be performed by Spanish baritone Miguelangelo Cavalcanti, Prague State Opera soloist. His previous regular engagements were at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon and at the Opera in Graz. He has guest appeared at the v Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, in opera houses in Leipzig, Hamburg, Cologne, and Basel. Since 2004 he has been soloist at the Prague State Opera.

Turkish tenor Efe Kişlali debuted in Prague, on the State Opera’s stage, in December 2006, as Radames (Aida). In the following year, he created the role of Des Grieux in the company’s new production of Manon Lescaut, and in 2009 scored an outstanding success in the title part of the new production of Otello.

British conductor Hilary Griffiths is the guest of numerous European opera houses, whence he has over the last few years extended his scope to Australia, South America, and the Far East. His conducting record at the Prague State Opera has encompassed over 200 showings of 23 operas, beyond which he has to his credit ten new productions, the most recent of which, Britten’s Death in Venice (2009), has won several prestigious awards.

Owing to the sudden illness of Italian mezzo-soprano Renata Lamanda the role of Amneris will be performed by Veronika Hajnová, Prague State Opera soloist. Veronika Hajnová was semi-finalist of the Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna where she was awarded the CNIPAL Prize.

Standing in as Violetta for Hungarian soprano Csilla Boross will be PSO soloist Jana Sibera. In June 2008 she was a finalist at the Barbara Hendricks International Vocal Competition in Strasbourg. Her collaboration with the famous tenor Jonas Kaufmann for his CD for Decca was also a major success. Csilla Boross will appear on an alternative date.

Ivan Kusnjer, laureate of several international competitions (Geneva, Sofia, Vercelli), three-times winner of the Thalia Award and of the European Gustav Mahler Award, has guest appeared on countless opera stages and concert platforms of Europe, the Americas, and Asia. He made his exquisite creation of Iago for the Prague State Opera’s new production of Otello (2009).

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
